Christmas is coming
Our preparations for next week involve a certain amount of shopping, and a good deal of travelling to and fro between Mayfield and Wirksworth; on Saturday the roads were running like rivers with water pouring off already saturated fields. We went to see Sam, Sas, Ben and Heather for the first time which was lovely - Ben in particular is changing so quickly at the moment, and Heather is really chatty and affectionate. Back at Jeff & Fi's, her dad Bruce arrived in the afternoon from Carlisle and Mary plucked a pheasant while I made a delicious gratin dauphinois for Sunday lunch. Jeff has stopped working now but Fi still has to go to the theatre most days, on Saaturday night to make sure a Welsh male voice choir started off OK. It is their 30-somethingth year at the New Vic. We shall be off to Stoke to see the Christmas show later in the week.
On Sunday it was drier, and we set out across a beautiful sunny landscape to Chatsworth. I do love this Derbyshire countryside. Jeff has been installing the lighting and sound for the Christmas decorations in the house for the 3rd year running, and this year the theme was pantomime. The children had a lovely time spotting the panto characters (the wolf in bed was the pick for me, but the beanstalk and Puss in Boots were great too) and Mary played the piano and was invited back after applause from an enthusiastic impromptu audience. Then back for lovely lunch at Sam & Sas's, Ben doing his favourite jigsaws, and an evening watching old Christmas specials on the telly. Christmas shopping and carols in the pub in Ashbourne today - Christmas is coming! Oh yes it is!!
